Borneo had always been on my short list of must-visit destinations and so I jumped at the opportunity. It would be a different kind of tour for me as well. While past tours I’ve led for Quest have been traditional nature tours, this trip would be with an alumni group from Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH. The college has a travel alumni organization that helps to organize trips for their members throughout the world, often accompanied by one of their professors who is an expert in their field. This trip would consist of eight days in Borneo and three days in Bali, with the Borneo portion focused on wildlife and ecology, while the Bali segment would have more of a focus on the culture and religions of the area. The group would be accompanied by Dr. Nate Dominy, a world renowned anthropologist and evolutionary ecologist at Dartmouth College who specializes in primate behaviour, morphology and ecology. I would act as the Quest representative, and we would also have local guides with us throughout the duration of the trip. With only four travelers signed up it would be a nice cozy group!

Inquire Now Customer reviews: The dive shop staff were incredible, they have unbelievable eyes for macro and I saw the most amazing macro things I have ever seen thanks to them as well as some great big stuff like the leopard shark and giant groupers. They were kind and lovely and helped us do the sunset dive every evening and took unbelievable care of me when I put my elbow on a scorpionfish!
I was in tears when I left the island. We read reports about slapdash dive operations at Lankayan but as experienced divers we couldn’t really see too many problems.

Randal does boat work and I go off to town and take art lessons. Sandakan is on the east coast of east Malaysia and was the home of American writer Agnes Keith whom I have mentioned several times. Both cost about the same. This attachment is about my art lessons. I am learning more than meets the eye when you look at the photos. I certainly am gaining an appreciation of anyone who can paint with watercolor and get it right.

June 30, All airlines allow passengers to carry limited quantities of baggage on to the aircraft with them. Long gone are the days when people could happily carry on as much as they could lift and there is a lot more standardisation within the airline industry now. Even then, this may vary between different airports so the best plan would be to follow the guidelines to enable you to hand carry whatever is most important and pack everything else in your checked baggage. You are unlikely to win a heated argument at the boarding gate and may find your precious items sent to the baggage hold and even pay more to have them there.
While most airlines seem to have settled on 7kg as a common weight, there is some flexibility in what is included and what extra you may take with you. In addition, there is some movement towards a common set of guidelines for the dimensions of carry-on bags and although these are not regulations, a number of airlines have adopted these guidelines.
For our story on these IATA guidelines, follow this link. UPDATE 22nd March Economy Traveller is monitoring the latest restrictions on the carrying of electronic devices including cameras larger than a average sized mobile phone. This information will be updated as the position becomes clearer. What is a LAG Bag? A zip-lock food bag of this size will do fine. If you are travelling domestically, you may not need to produce your LAGs for inspection. However, International travellers will certainly need to have them ready for checking.

North Borneo dispute and Madrid Protocol of The Philippines retains a dormant territorial claim to eastern Sabah, formerly known as North Borneo , through the heritage of the Sultanate of Sulu. In line with International Court of Justice court decision in the case concerning sovereignty of Pulau Ligitan and Pulau Sipadan in , Malaysia views that Sultan of Sulu indisputably relinquished the sovereign rights of all its possession in favour of Spain on 22 July , hence losing any title to its claim of Sabah.
Sulu succession dispute Another factor behind the standoff is the unresolved status of the Sultanate of Sulu. However, his status as sultan is disputed by several other claimants. In response, Jamalul Kiram III, claiming to be the legitimate heir to the throne of Sulu, decreed on 11 November that a civilian and military contingent should assert his territorial rights in North Borneo. He appointed his brother and Raja Muda “heir apparent” or “crown prince” , Agbimuddin Kiram, to lead the group.
Malaysian police patrol boats also patrolled nearby waters. At the same time, Filipino security agencies blocked off entry from southern Philippines. On 26 February , President Aquino appealed to Kiram III to recall his followers and to hold discussions with the government to address his family’s concerns. Addressing Kiram III, he said, “It must be clear to you that this small group of people will not succeed in addressing your grievances, and that there is no way that force can achieve your aims”.
The president said that he had ordered an investigation into possible violations of laws by Kiram III, his followers and collaborators, citing the Constitution’s provision on renouncing war as an instrument of national policy and Article of the Revised Penal Code , which punishes those who “provoke or give occasion for a war Aquino also declined to confirm reports of other parties being allegedly behind the standoff to sabotage the Bangsamoro peace process.
In a statement, he said: This standoff has reached a critical point where the Philippine government must now act decisively and do what is necessary to protect the general interest of the Filipino people.

KL is a modest little city on steroids, with muscular architectural monuments and traffic jams that feel out of proportion to its winding, tree lined streets and village-like neighborhoods. Colorful and chaotic, it retains a vitality that neighboring Singapore nearly polished away in its own efforts to become Asia’s Tomorrowland. But it’s KL that feels like a themepark in progress.
Here, you may ramble through a traditional Malay kampong in the shadow of the show-stopping twin towers; or ride the cute monorail that offers first-time visitors vistas of both construction sites and destruction sites. Half of Chinatown has been turned into a uglified pedestrian mall that feels like anywhere but Chinatown, while old and crumbling heritage shophouses nearby that were thankfully overlooked by civic planners still house traditional businesses that ooze with charm of days gone by.
